Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear revealed Thursday that he received calls from two federal agencies informing him that Republican Senator Mitch McConnell had died while hospitalized, according to remarks made during an interview with journalist Katie Couric. Beshear declined to identify which agencies contacted him or provide a timeline for when the communications occurred.
The governor’s disclosure prompted inquiries from media outlets including Fox News Digital to both his office and McConnell’s representatives. McConnell’s office has not responded to requests for comment regarding Beshear’s account as of publication.
McConnell, 84, spent nearly four weeks receiving hospital care before his office released a detailed statement on July 12 addressing his medical situation. The announcement explained that the senator had been hospitalized following a fall sustained in June.
Emergency records from June 14 showed McConnell was unresponsive upon hospital arrival and may have experienced cardiac complications, though his staff provided minimal information during his extended stay. The lack of transparency fueled widespread public speculation about the extent of his injuries.
In his July 12 statement, McConnell directly addressed health rumors circulating about his condition. “My physicians have established that I sustained no fractures or head injuries. I experienced no cardiac event or stroke. There are no malignancies or internal bleeding,” he stated.
Beshear had publicly pressured McConnell to disclose details about his health status, posting on social media July 10 calling for the senator to provide “an update on his own health” and “put an end to the wild speculation.” The governor also sent a formal letter to McConnell on July 8 requesting comprehensive health information for Kentucky constituents.
Hospital staff documented that McConnell developed a respiratory infection early in his treatment but responded well to antibiotic therapy. While McConnell has indicated his intention to return to Senate duties, his office has not announced a timeline for his resumption of legislative work.
