Kentucky’s Democratic governor Andy Beshear announced during a recent media appearance that he had received telephone calls from two separate federal agencies claiming that Republican Senator Mitch McConnell had passed away while undergoing hospital treatment. The remarks came during an interview that was made public on Thursday with journalist Katie Couric.
The governor declined to disclose the identities of the federal agencies involved or to specify when these communications took place. He stated that the callers had informed him that McConnell “had passed,” though Beshear has served in his current position since December 2019.
News outlets, including Fox News Digital, reached out to both the governor’s office and McConnell’s office for statements in response to Beshear’s claims. As of publication, McConnell’s representatives had not yet provided a reply to the inquiries.
McConnell’s time in the hospital extended for nearly four weeks before his office issued a comprehensive statement on July 12 explaining his situation. The announcement confirmed that the 84-year-old lawmaker had been receiving care for injuries stemming from a fall that occurred in June.
The senator’s office released a photograph showing McConnell in his hospital room alongside his spouse. The extended delay in providing information had fueled considerable public curiosity and speculation regarding what had prompted his prolonged absence from the Senate.
Emergency call records from June 14, when McConnell was brought to the hospital, documented that he was unresponsive at the time and may have experienced cardiac issues. For several weeks afterward, little information became available as his staff withheld details about his medical condition.
On July 12, McConnell personally addressed the various rumors circulating about his health. “My physicians have established that I sustained no fractures or head injuries. I experienced no cardiac event or stroke. There are no malignancies or internal bleeding,” the senator stated.
Two days before releasing his statement, Beshear had publicly called for McConnell to be forthcoming about his health situation through a social media message. The governor referenced his earlier requests that then-President Joe Biden provide clarity regarding his own medical situation.
In his post, Beshear urged McConnell to follow suit by issuing “an update on his own health” and to “put an end to the wild speculation” surrounding his hospitalization.
On July 8, the governor had forwarded an official communication to McConnell requesting detailed information about his medical status. Beshear asked that the senator “provide comprehensive information to the people of Kentucky about where things stand with your health.”
Hospital personnel noted that McConnell developed a respiratory infection during his initial days of treatment but responded favorably to antibiotic therapy. Despite his serious health challenges and the initial injury, McConnell has suggested he intends to resume his Senate position.
McConnell’s office has refrained from announcing when he might be ready to return to his legislative responsibilities. The timeline for his recovery and his resumption of Senate work remain unclear to the public.
