The strike occurred approximately 23 miles northeast of Al Khasab, Oman, at roughly 2 a.m. local time, though authorities have released minimal details about the vessel’s identity, flag state, or any resulting casualties.

British maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed the ship suffered damage in the incident but declined to provide additional specifics. The UKMTO did not identify the vessel or offer further information regarding the nature of the projectile or the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The incident unfolds against a backdrop of conflicting statements regarding U.S.-Iran negotiations. President Donald Trump asserted Monday that a comprehensive accord addressing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program was on the horizon. However, Iranian officials have publicly denied engaging in direct talks with Washington, claiming discussions are limited to separate negotiations with Oman.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari stated Tuesday that all parties remain engaged in mediation efforts and are pursuing diplomatic solutions. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman countered Monday by rejecting claims of U.S. negotiations, restricting Tehran’s participation to Strait of Hormuz discussions with Oman alone.

Trump expressed visible frustration with the contradictory messaging in a Truth Social post Monday, asserting that Iranian officials were conducting substantive talks with the United States despite their public denials. “They ask for a meeting, some would say ‘beg,’ talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say, openly and proudly, that they’re not having any discussions,” Trump wrote.

During an Oval Office appearance, Trump reiterated his position that diplomatic engagement was occurring regardless of Iran’s public statements. “For some reason they, when they’re talking, they don’t like saying that they’re talking,” Trump stated. “So I say we’re in talks, big deal, we’re in talks. And they’ll sometimes deny it even though they spend hours and hours together talking.”
