Twitch personality Hasan Piker articulated his position on Palestinian armed resistance during a Sunday appearance on CNN’s “The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper,” asserting that Palestinians possess an internationally recognized right to fight militarily while acknowledging instances of war crimes. The self-described democratic socialist acknowledged that Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by multiple governments, has committed such violations but framed his support within a broader geopolitical context regarding Israeli occupation.
When pressed by CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan about past statements calling Hamas “a thousand times better than the fascist settler colonial apartheid state” of Israel, Piker characterized his position as “harm-reduction” voting rather than endorsement of Hamas’s domestic policies. He argued that Palestinians across the political spectrum view Israeli occupation as their primary existential threat, superseding disagreements with Hamas’s governance.
The Anti-Defamation League issued a sharp statement condemning Piker’s remarks and Democratic officials who associate with him. An ADL spokesperson declared that his rhetoric—broadcast to more than 11 million followers—constitutes genuine support for a terrorist organization and warned that political figures who platform him signal acceptance of such views. The American Jewish Committee similarly stated that support for designated terrorist organizations crosses a fundamental democratic line and urged leaders across sectors to exercise responsibility in amplifying such voices.
Piker’s comments reflect ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party over his growing influence as democratic socialism gains electoral momentum. Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville recently stated he would leave the party if it continued embracing Piker, claiming an “overwhelming majority” of Democrats share his concerns about the streamer’s impact on party direction.
