Authorities in North Carolina are investigating the deaths of Stephen Larnell Willetts and Tracey Parker Willetts, who were discovered shot inside their Wilmington residence Thursday morning. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office determined that evidence at the scene supports a murder-suicide theory, with the wife fatally shooting her husband before taking her own life.
Emergency responders arrived at the home after one of the couple’s smartwatches registered a fall and initiated an automatic 911 call when the alarm was not disabled. Deputies responded to the EMS call in the early morning hours, leading to the discovery of both bodies inside the residence.
According to social media posts, the couple had just marked their 40th wedding anniversary the previous day. The pair were well-known participants in the Wrightsville Beach paddleboarding community, with numerous photos shared online documenting their shared recreational activities.
Stephen Willetts was a retired Army member and devoted EMT, according to statements from acquaintances. Fuller Royal, identified as Tracey Willetts’ second cousin, shared on social media that the couple had endured significant tragedy, losing both of their sons within a single year between 2013 and 2014.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office continues its active investigation into the incident.
