Kevin Owens secured a championship opportunity at WWE SummerSlam’s second night by defeating three competitors in a match for the Undisputed WWE Championship No. 1 contendership. The victory marked Owens’ first match following nearly 16 months away from competition due to a serious neck injury that forced him to step away from the ring.

The contest was originally scheduled as a two-person match between Sami Zayn and Finn Balor before SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, recently reinstated after his loss to Gunther on Night 1, unilaterally expanded the bout to include both Gunther and Owens. The decision set the stage for Owens’ dramatic return at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, where the crowd’s reaction was immediate and intense.
