Petersen’s Clutch Pitching Lifts Marlins Past Mets in Series Finale

The Miami Marlins blanked the New York Mets 2-0 on Sunday, capturing the final three contests of a four-game series at Citi Field. Michael Petersen delivered a crucial performance on the mound, escaping a bases-loaded predicament without any outs recorded in the seventh inning as Miami improved its postseason positioning.

Joe Mack supplied the offensive firepower with a solo home run, while Xavier Edwards contributed an RBI single to account for the Marlins’ runs. Sandy Alcantara started for Miami, yielding four hits across six-plus innings while recording five strikeouts in a solid effort that set the tone for the visiting team’s victory.

Petersen entered with runners occupying all three bases and nobody out following Luis Robert Jr.’s single and Jared Young’s double to begin the seventh. The reliever walked Marcus Semien before retiring Jorge Polanco and Francisco Alvarez via strikeout, then induced A.J. Ewing to ground out to the second baseman to end the threat.

Pete Fairbanks closed out the game for the Marlins with a ninth-inning save, his 17th of the season, navigating two walks in the process. The win left Miami 1½ games behind Philadelphia in the chase for the final National League playoff berth.

Mets spot starter Robert Stock pitched a career-high five innings in his first major league appearance since June 8, 2025, allowing three hits including Mack’s homer while striking out four. Stock, in just his third career start, was making his first big league outing in more than three months and was originally called up as a reliever by then-Padres manager Andy Green in 2018.

New York employed three relief pitchers following Stock’s departure, with Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver and Huascar Brazobán each delivering hitless innings. The Marlins outhit the Mets in the series, connecting for six home runs compared to two for the Mets.
