During his annual youth basketball camp at Slam Academy gymnasium on Sunday, Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo engaged directly with young attendees, a leadership quality that helped earn him the 2026 NBA Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award. The 29-year-old’s hands-on involvement with community initiatives captured the attention of basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the NBA Social Justice Coalition.
Adebayo’s charitable work spans multiple areas, including toy and backpack distribution drives, turkey giveaways, and direct engagement with Miami’s youth population. His Bam Books and Brotherhood Foundation has focused on advancing literacy and sports participation among children, drawing particular praise from James Cadogan, executive director of the NBA Social Justice Coalition, who emphasized the authenticity of these efforts.
Abdul-Jabbar delivered a video message highlighting Adebayo’s “unwavering commitment to extending opportunities for young people” before presenting the award. Cadogan noted that Adebayo’s consistency and broad impact across numerous lives distinguished him among candidates, with the foundation’s programming reaching children in meaningful ways.
The nearly 7-foot center attributed his values and dedication to community impact to his mother, describing her as his biggest supporter. Adebayo downplayed the award itself, stating that affecting lives matters more than accolades, and expressed gratitude for his mother’s reaction to his positive contributions to society.
