Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin characterized Saturday’s bombing at a restaurant in the Russian capital as a “brutal terrorist act” on Sunday, though he stopped short of identifying the perpetrators. In a statement posted to social media, Sobyanin confirmed fatalities and said wounded individuals were receiving medical treatment at city hospitals.
The explosion occurred Saturday evening at a dining establishment located on Kudrinskaya Square in central Moscow. A security guard, a restaurant patron, and the woman who carried the explosive device were killed in the blast, according to Russian state media reporting based on local officials’ accounts.
The National Anti-Terrorism Committee reported that the detonation injured at least 21 additional people. No individual or organization had publicly claimed responsibility for the attack as of Sunday afternoon, and Russian authorities provided no updated information regarding the ongoing investigation into the incident.
The Moscow Investigative Committee confirmed Saturday evening that the bombing remained under active investigation. Russian officials have not disclosed details about the identity or motivations of those involved in the attack.
