The Los Angeles Dodgers secured the trade deadline’s marquee acquisition Saturday, pulling two-time defending AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. The reigning World Series champions bolstered an already elite roster featuring Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Mookie Betts with the 29-year-old left-handed ace.
Detroit will receive three minor league prospects in the transaction: right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith, plus outfielder Zyhir Hope. The Tigers completed the deal while defeating Oakland on Saturday night, though the move does not address their struggles this season as they sit 16 games under .500 with approximately 100 contests remaining.
Skubal carries a $32 million salary following arbitration and is eligible for free agency after the World Series concludes. The pitcher expressed a preference in July to remain with Detroit through the season in pursuit of a championship, which has eluded the franchise since 1984.
Through this season, Skubal owns a 7-5 record with a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts across 96 2/3 innings. Over seven seasons entirely with Detroit, he holds a 61-42 mark with a 3.04 ERA and a 2-1 postseason record with a 2.04 ERA in six starts.
