IndyCar revealed its next-generation IR-28 chassis this week, and the series wasted little time putting the new car through its paces. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi piloted the machine Saturday during a two-day test session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.439-mile road course layout, providing early feedback on the extensively redesigned vehicle.
Rossi expressed satisfaction with how thoroughly teams prepared the IR-28 for its track debut. “I’ve been a part of some new car launches before, and I can’t say that any have gone as smooth as this one has,” Rossi told IndyCar.com, crediting the collective effort across the sport. He added that drivers, fans, teams and sponsors had anticipated this moment for an extended period.
Inclement weather restricted Rossi’s available running time, yet the driver still gathered valuable data on the vehicle’s handling characteristics. Despite the conditions, Rossi highlighted the car’s reliability during Saturday’s work, noting that a single sensor replacement represented the only significant issue encountered. “That’s a huge testament to Dallara, IndyCar and everyone involved,” he said.
The IR-28 marks IndyCar’s first all-new chassis since the DW12 debuted in 2012, and it represents the first design purpose-built for the Aeroscreen and hybrid power systems. The vehicle is expected to weigh approximately 100 pounds less than the current generation. Reigning series champion Alex Palou will test the chassis Sunday at the same Indianapolis venue.
