An explosion at a restaurant in central Moscow on Saturday evening claimed three lives and left at least 21 others injured, according to Russian authorities. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. at a ground floor terrace establishment located at Kudrinskaya Square, the historic plaza featuring seven Stalinist-era skyscrapers in the nation’s capital.
Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee attributed the blast to a homemade explosive device. Among the fatalities were a woman who allegedly attempted to bring the device into the restaurant, a security guard, and a patron, RIA Novosti reported, citing official sources.
The explosion took place at Balzi Rossi, an Italian restaurant that had been closed to the public Saturday evening for a private event, according to the establishment’s website. Law enforcement personnel in heavy tactical gear secured the scene following the incident.
