Social media posts from Nebraska Democratic congressional nominee Denise Powell reveal her public opposition to the state’s 2023 law limiting gender transition procedures for minors, according to newly surfaced content that has drawn sharp criticism from Republican groups. Powell, before securing her party’s nomination, consistently advocated against LB 574, known as the “Let Them Grow Act,” which bans gender transition procedures for those under 19 and restricts puberty blockers and hormone treatments.
In a March 2023 Facebook post, Powell urged Nebraska residents to contact state senators and attend Capitol hearings regarding the legislation, describing it as “discriminatory and hateful.” She encouraged supporters to wear shirts reading “PROTECT TRANS KIDS” and wrote that Nebraska had an opportunity to “set an example” by rejecting such restrictions that were sweeping states including Iowa, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Powell amplified her message across platforms, posting videos on TikTok under the username “dbpinomaha” in February and March 2023 opposing the measure. One post featured footage of high school student walkouts in Omaha and Lincoln, which she characterized as support for transgender youth that deserved backing.
The Nebraska Legislature passed LB 574 with a 33-15 vote, and Gov. Jim Pillen signed it into law. A Nebraska First PAC poll conducted the same year found 61% of likely voters supported prohibiting gender-altering procedures for minors, with 78% agreeing children should reach adulthood before undergoing irreversible surgeries.
Powell now faces Republican Omaha City Councilman Brinker Harding in Nebraska’s open 2nd Congressional District, a swing seat Democrats are targeting while Republicans defend their narrow House majority. Republican critics argue her advocacy positions her outside mainstream Nebraska values, with the National Republican Congressional Committee characterizing her as a “rubber stamp for the radical far-left.”
Powell’s campaign has not provided comment on the resurfaced posts. Her official priorities, according to campaign materials, focus on reducing costs, protecting healthcare and abortion access, supporting workers, and opposing what she describes as President Donald Trump’s “abuse of power and attacks on our democracy.”
