The University of North Carolina has formally initiated an investigation into general manager Michael Lombardi following his placement on leave, the school announced this week. Officials confirmed through the university’s Office of Counsel that the inquiry stems from allegations that prompted the personnel action announced July 27. Athletic director Steve Newmark emphasized the institution’s commitment to conducting a thorough review while moving forward expeditiously.
Head coach Bill Belichick largely avoided direct commentary on Lombardi’s status during a media availability, offering only vague reassurances about the program’s operations. “We’re working through some things,” Belichick stated, citing the timing of the calendar year and multiple competing priorities. He declined to elaborate on how the general manager’s absence might impact team preparations entering his second season at Chapel Hill.
Newmark acknowledged the university’s desire for swift resolution without compromising investigative integrity. “It’s important they do it the right way and they gather all the information they need,” the athletic director said, noting the Office of University Counsel has established no specific timeline for completion. He declined to address whether other athletic department personnel faced scrutiny or to comment on reports of a separate College Sports Commission examination of the football program.
Lombardi has retained attorney Tom Mars to represent his interests in the matter. Mars released a statement Friday asserting his client welcomes the opportunity to resolve the situation and is cooperating fully with the university’s process, asking the public to withhold judgment pending the investigation’s conclusion.
Chancellor Lee Roberts expressed frustration with the distraction, stating the university should focus on student-athlete success rather than administrative matters. The Tar Heels compiled a 4-8 record during Belichick’s inaugural season.
