A Manhattan grand jury has indicted Raul Morales, 51, in connection with two stabbing attacks that occurred on the Upper West Side last Thursday. Prosecutors allege that Morales targeted an Asian man and a Jewish man in the separate incidents, each occurring in the same neighborhood.
According to authorities, Morales shouted “Allahu Akbar” during at least one of the attacks. The nature of the statements made during the alleged assaults has prompted investigators to examine whether the crimes may constitute hate-motivated offenses under state law.
The indictment represents the formal charges against Morales following the grand jury’s review of evidence presented by prosecutors. He currently faces multiple felony counts related to the stabbing incidents.
