Former Juror in Murdaugh Trial Seeks Public Release of State Investigation Into Court Clerk

Myra Crosby, a juror dismissed from the high-profile Alex Murdaugh murder trial, has filed new court documents pressing for public disclosure of a state investigation into Becky Hill, the former Colleton County, South Carolina, court clerk. Crosby, nicknamed the “egg juror” after requesting to retrieve eggs and her purse from the jury room hours before deliberations began, argues that transparency regarding Hill’s alleged jury tampering should be available to the public.

Hill stands accused of improperly communicating with jurors during the 2023 trial, allegedly instructing them to disregard Murdaugh’s defense strategy. The South Carolina Supreme Court unanimously overturned Murdaugh’s murder conviction, determining that Hill’s conduct directly compromised the integrity of the jury’s verdict.

Crosby submitted a Freedom of Information Act request in May seeking the release of records and videos related to Hill’s jury tampering investigation. The state attorney general’s office initially resisted disclosure, citing the need to blur or remove portions of videos to protect juror identities.

Crosby counters that identity protection measures are unnecessary since jurors have already testified in open court and some have participated in television interviews and documentary productions. She maintains that even limited redactions should not prevent the timely release of investigative materials to the public.
