Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Ed Oliver has spent the past two months privately grieving the death of his young son, a tragedy that became public knowledge Saturday through social media discussion. The child, age 2, drowned in June at the family’s ranch property near Houston in what the team characterized as a devastating loss.
The Bills organization released an official statement Saturday expressing support for Oliver and his family during the period of mourning. General Manager Brandon Beane wrote that the organization stands with the defensive lineman through what he described as an unthinkable tragedy, pledging continued support for Oliver and those close to him during this difficult time.
Oliver was absent from Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns, with the team citing both the personal circumstances and an unspecified injury that has kept him sidelined from recent practice sessions. Despite the injury, he remained engaged with the organization ahead of the upcoming season.
The six-year Bills veteran, who arrived in Buffalo via first-round draft selection in 2019, has established himself as a cornerstone of the team’s interior defensive line with 30 career sacks and notable run-stopping ability. Oliver and his family have requested privacy and prayers as they navigate their loss.
