In a significant political shift, Jacob Smith, who spent five years as a deputy legislative director and policy advisor to Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, has joined the Senate campaign of Democrat state Rep. James Talarico. The move marks a rare instance of a senior Republican operative crossing party lines in a race that will determine control of Cornyn’s seat following his primary loss in May.
Cornyn suffered a decisive defeat at the hands of former Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who enjoyed backing from President Donald Trump. The general election showdown between Paxton and Talarico represents one of approximately a dozen Senate contests nationwide that could determine whether Republicans maintain their Senate majority or Democrats regain control of the chamber.
Smith announced his defection through a statement expressing his commitment to Talarico’s candidacy despite his lengthy career within Republican ranks. He criticized Paxton as the “most corrupt, self-dealing politician in Texas,” accusing him of prioritizing wealthy contributors over everyday citizens.
Recent polling suggests the race remains highly competitive. A Fox News survey conducted late last month showed Talarico leading Paxton 51% to 48% among registered voters, though Republicans remain somewhat fractured, with 89% supporting Paxton compared to 98% of Democrats backing Talarico. The network’s latest power rankings shifted the Texas Senate race from Lean Republican to toss-up status.
Paxton faces mounting legal and personal challenges that Democrats argue make him vulnerable in the general election. The former attorney general is currently navigating a contentious divorce and has confronted numerous scandals throughout his political career. Cornyn has pledged to support the Republican nominee despite his primary defeat.
