J.T. Ginn of the Oakland Athletics has yet to surrender a base hit through six complete innings of Saturday night’s matchup against the Washington Nationals in West Sacramento, California. The right-hander has struck out seven batters while recording 18 outs on 21 total batters faced, keeping Washington’s lineup completely off the board through the first half of the contest.
The Nationals’ only baserunners reached through three separate walks, with two occurring in the second inning and another in the fifth. Ginn has been highly efficient, throwing 77 pitches with 47 strikes as he pursues what would be a historic achievement for his career.
Washington came closest to breaking through in the fifth inning when Dylan Crews appeared to reach first base on an infield single to third. The play was initially ruled a hit, but the Athletics successfully challenged the decision and replay review overturned the call for the inning’s final out. Third baseman Joshua Kuroda-Grauer also contributed defensively with a diving catch on a popup by C.J. Abrams in the fourth inning.
Ginn enters Saturday with a 3.67 earned run average and has never completed a full nine-inning game during his three seasons in Major League Baseball. The Athletics, riding a 10-game losing streak, currently lead 6-0.
The last no-hitter by an Oakland pitcher came in 2019 when Mike Fiers blanked the Cincinnati Reds while the franchise was still based in Oakland. Four Houston Astros pitchers combined for the only other no-hitter in the majors this season, accomplished on May 25 against the Texas Rangers.
