Fleetwood Chases Childhood Dream at Royal Birkdale, Trails Burns by Five Shots

English golfer Tommy Fleetwood remains determined to capture the British Open at Royal Birkdale in his native Southport, the course where he has harbored championship ambitions since childhood. Despite mixed results Saturday, he has not wavered from his long-held objective of winning on the storied links.

A 1-under 69 on Saturday extended Fleetwood’s streak to three consecutive rounds under par, but the round left him five shots back of Sam Burns entering the final 18 holes. Burns holds the lead going into Sunday’s conclusion of the championship.

Fleetwood acknowledged the weight of expectation without allowing it to overwhelm him. “There’s no pressure on me at all really, except for my own expectations,” he remarked. “And of course, it’s a really beautiful thing that the town is so hopeful for me and they want me to do well.”

The local crowd has provided remarkable support throughout the tournament, with thousands of spectators lining the course and showing particular enthusiasm after his Friday birdie at the 15th hole. Playing partner Jon Rahm compared the atmosphere to competing in his home Spanish Open, describing the energy as equally intense despite that event lacking major championship status.

Fleetwood gained ground early with two front-nine birdies that pulled him within one stroke of the lead. His approach shot to the 11th green settled just 2 feet from the pin, representing his best positioning on the leaderboard all day.

The momentum evaporated on the closing stretch when Fleetwood’s game faltered. A missed green at the 13th followed by a missed 6-foot par putt cost him, and a poor drive at 18 into a pot bunker forced a layup that resulted in bogey.

The course has yielded three rounds of 62 this week, though all occurred during benign morning conditions before afternoon winds strengthened and greens hardened. Fleetwood has visualized winning at Royal Birkdale since age 7, a daily practice he maintains to this day.
