In an interview with Fox News Digital, Jerry O’Connell attributed his greatest life transformation to a single encounter: meeting his wife, Rebecca Romijn. The 52-year-old actor opened up about this pivotal relationship while promoting his latest film, “Summer’s Last Resort,” which launched on Tubi.
O’Connell described how encountering Romijn forced him to mature beyond his earlier lifestyle and embrace an unexpected path forward. He acknowledged his own immaturity prior to their relationship, noting that her desire to build a family fundamentally shifted his perspective on his future.
“I was very immature,” O’Connell shared. “And then I met my wife, and my wife wanted to start a family… I figured it’s not going to get better than this for me, so I might as well settle down.” The couple now raises 17-year-old twin daughters, Charlie and Dolly.
O’Connell and Romijn first crossed paths in 2004 at a Maxim Hot 100 event. Their relationship progressed quickly, with an engagement proposal arriving in 2005 and a wedding ceremony held in July 2007.
The actor’s real-life experience as a father to teenagers informed his creative approach while filming “Summer’s Last Resort.” In the movie, O’Connell portrays an enthusiastic boyfriend of a single mother, a role that drew inspiration from his daily interactions with his own daughters.
O’Connell explained that his daughters’ constant embarrassment at his antics served as material for his comedic performance. He channeled their eye-rolling responses into nearly every scene with young co-star Violet McGraw, who plays the skeptical teenage protagonist.
“I live with teenage girls, my daughters, and they are eternally embarrassed by me,” O’Connell said. “Everything I say is the wrong thing to say. I really brought that to set, and anytime I worked with Violet, I thought about what would make my daughters avoid talking to me for weeks.”
Beyond entertainment value, fatherhood has reshaped O’Connell’s philosophy on parenting and personal boundaries. He revealed that his daughters have taught him the importance of granting independence rather than imposing control.
When one of his daughters wanted to abandon volleyball, O’Connell initially pushed back before recognizing his mistake. He now consciously steps back and allows his children to explore their own interests, including acting pursuits.
“I have to trust my kids — they’re pretty good kids,” he reflected. “I just sort of let them find their own way. That’s something that they taught me: stop trying to control situations.”
O’Connell extended this same collaborative approach to his professional work with McGraw. By demonstrating confidence and creative risk-taking on set, he encouraged the young actress to embrace improvisation and trust her instincts.
McGraw acknowledged the impact of observing veteran performers like O’Connell and Sophia Bush during production. Their willingness to deviate from the script and commit fully to creative choices inspired her to adopt a more fearless approach to her own performance.
O’Connell reflected on his own growth as a performer, admitting that younger versions of himself avoided departing from prepared material. He credited experience and maturity with enabling him to loosen up and take creative chances that ultimately enhanced the production.
“When I was a younger actor, I was afraid to go off script and goof around,” he acknowledged. “I wanted to really loosen up for Violet and show her that you can take risks on set.”
The film follows a defensive teenager whose vacation plans derail when she must contend with her mother’s new boyfriend—a cheerful man who also serves as her vice principal. Her scheme to sabotage their relationship ultimately teaches unexpected lessons about family dynamics and emotional growth.
“Summer’s Last Resort” features an ensemble cast including Sophia Bush, Tim Rozon, Violet McGraw, and Jerry O’Connell. The streaming movie is currently available on Tubi for viewing.
