Dodgers Star Mookie Betts Says Athletes Should Focus on Sports, Not Politics

Mookie Betts has made clear he intends to remain a baseball player first and foremost, rejecting any role as a political spokesperson or advocate. The 33-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder recently declined to attend the White House following the team’s 2024 World Series championship, a decision he attributed entirely to family priorities rather than political disagreement.

Betts welcomed a newborn and chose to prioritize time with his expanding household. He firmly denied that his absence carried any political undertones, stressing instead the personal nature of his choice to forgo the traditional championship celebration at the nation’s capital.

The four-time World Series champion expressed bewilderment at why modern society views professional athletes as inherent political actors. Speaking with Fox News Digital, Betts questioned the expectation that athletes should serve as catalysts for political change or ideological messaging.

“We go out and play our sport,” Betts stated. He acknowledged that while some athletes genuinely embrace political involvement, he remained puzzled by the widespread assumption that all athletes should function as political figures or activists.

The eight-time All-Star highlighted the difficult position athletes occupy when making White House decisions. He noted that regardless of whether they attend or decline, backlash from some segment of the public appears inevitable.

“Athletes are in positions where you’re kind of damned if you do or damned if you don’t,” Betts explained. He emphasized that facing guaranteed criticism from some quarter justified prioritizing his own happiness and family welfare over attempting to appease everyone.

Betts acknowledged he could not satisfy the entire nation with his choices. Rather than chase universal approval, he resolved to make decisions benefiting himself and his loved ones, including his newly born child.

The Nashville native is currently in his 13th major league season. His career statistics include a .288 batting average, 302 home runs, and 944 runs batted in across his tenure with multiple teams.

This season has presented different challenges, with Betts managing just a .235 average alongside 11 homers and 31 RBIs through the midpoint. The six-time Gold Glove Award recipient aims to regain his typical form during the second half as Los Angeles pursues a third consecutive World Series crown.
