Detectives in Palm Beach County are appealing to the public for information about a man accused of using online dating platforms to target and assault women. The Sheriff’s Office issued the public request on July 14, approximately five months following an initial sexual battery case reported at a local hospital facility.
The complainant said she had connected with Stephen Hakim through the dating application Hinge. Subsequently, law enforcement analysts connected Hakim’s genetic material to biological evidence collected from the victim, according to court filings.
Laboratory analysis of the woman’s blood and urine samples revealed the presence of multiple sedative compounds. The victim maintained she had not voluntarily ingested these substances, she informed investigators.
Hakim, a 27-year-old resident of Delray Beach, faces charges of sexual assault following his arrest on July 8. He was freed from custody the following day after posting $25,000 bail. The defendant has entered a plea of not guilty to the allegations.
According to police documentation, the victim and Hakim exchanged initial messages on Hinge for approximately one hour before moving their communication to text messaging and video. The two arranged to meet that same evening in what they characterized as a casual gathering, according to statements reviewed by investigators.
The woman reported that Hakim picked her up around 11 p.m. in his vehicle ostensibly to visit a nightclub. Instead, police documents show he transported her to his residential apartment. She described his black Tesla as traveling at excessive speeds between 90 and 100 miles per hour.
She characterized his apartment as sparsely furnished and notably clean, lacking typical household items such as television or animals. The two consumed four beers and conversed about professional matters, the alleged victim told deputies. Hakim subsequently offered to perform a massage, at which point the woman experienced sudden and overwhelming fatigue that rendered her immobilized.
Following the alleged assault, the woman expressed distress and confronted Hakim about the attack. Police documents indicate he responded with dismissive statements characteristic of gaslighting behavior, asking her what she was referencing.
Defense counsel representing Hakim has disputed the allegations, issuing statements to media outlets asserting his client denies any nonconsensual conduct occurred. The legal team has declined further communication with news organizations regarding the matter.
Research from the Pew Center conducted in 2023 indicates that roughly 53 percent of adults between ages 18 and 29 have utilized dating applications. Industry analysts note that since the late 1990s, digital matchmaking platforms have fundamentally altered how adults pursue romantic connections.
According to Megan Cutter, director of victim assistance services at the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), dating applications themselves do not inherently pose dangers to users. The organization administers the National Sexual Assault Hotline and provides victim advocacy services nationwide.
Cutter emphasized that numerous relationships originating through dating applications develop into healthy, lasting partnerships. However, she cautioned that bad actors exploit these platforms to perpetrate crimes against unsuspecting users.
Data from RAINN shows that only approximately one-third of sexual assault survivors report their experiences to law enforcement authorities. Victims frequently refrain from reporting due to threats made by perpetrators against themselves and their loved ones, Cutter explained.
Statistics indicate that one out of every six American women has experienced attempted or completed rape during her lifetime, according to RAINN. Young women in the 18-to-24 age bracket face disproportionately higher risk of sexual assault victimization compared to other demographic groups.
Cutter recommended that users exercise heightened caution when evaluating potential matches on dating platforms. Suspicious profiles include those lacking substantial biographical information, absent social media verification, or featuring underdeveloped account details.
Individuals who rapidly press to exchange personal contact information or relocate conversations outside the application warrant skepticism, she advised. Once perpetrators obtain email addresses or phone numbers, they may employ those details to determine residential location or access personal social media profiles containing identifying information.
Cutter suggested that dating profile photographs should differ from images posted on personal social media accounts. Modern reverse image search technology enables quick identification of photos across multiple online platforms, potentially exposing private information.
She also noted that removing embedded metadata from digital photographs reduces the likelihood of location data and timestamps being extracted. Metadata constitutes concealed information attached to image files that may contain geographic coordinates and temporal information.
While digital dating represents a widespread practice utilized by millions globally, Cutter stressed that the technology itself enables both positive and harmful outcomes. “People discover genuinely wonderful and fulfilling relationships online,” she stated. “The issue arises when individuals misuse these tools to inflict harm.”
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit is requesting assistance from community members in locating anyone who may have had interactions with Hakim through online dating services. Investigators believe additional victims may exist who have not yet made reports to authorities.
