Wildfire Smoke Forces MLB Schedule Adjustments Across Multiple Cities

Canadian wildfires have sent smoke billowing across North America, disrupting Major League Baseball operations in several cities throughout the week. A Major League Soccer contest was called off on Thursday, while the Philadelphia MLB team accelerated its game start by one hour as a precautionary measure.

As the second half of the baseball season commenced Friday, roughly five games faced potential air quality concerns, prompting teams to implement various operational changes to protect players and spectators.

New York experienced hazardous air conditions in 2023 that exceeded 300 on the air quality index, more than double the readings seen this week. By Friday, conditions in the city had improved sufficiently to allow the scheduled Yankees contest to proceed as planned.

Toronto, situated near the wildfire epicenter, presented unique challenges. Thursday evening saw hazardous readings, though conditions moderated to low-risk levels by Friday afternoon in the city proper. Surrounding Ontario communities continued reporting elevated pollution levels.

The Blue Jays opted to close the retractable roof at Rogers Centre following an early-afternoon decision. Team officials stated the structure could potentially be opened before the sixth inning if umpires and league officials determined atmospheric conditions had sufficiently improved for fan comfort.

Milwaukee registered a severe air quality index of 287 at mid-morning, though readings dropped to 133 by evening hours. The Brewers confirmed their game would proceed normally, offering ticket exchanges for fans preferring not to attend.

Cleveland’s contest did not fare as well. Despite posting their lineup in early afternoon, the Guardians announced postponement by early evening, with the makeup scheduled as a doubleheader Saturday. The city’s air quality index reached 209, classified as very unhealthy.

Chicago experienced similar afternoon deterioration, with readings at 241 during afternoon hours before improving to 138 by evening. The Cubs’ Friday night game at Wrigley Field remained scheduled to proceed.
