Longtime Democratic operative James Carville contended Thursday that visible support for President Donald Trump appears to be diminishing across the country, suggesting that only the most committed backers remain enthusiastic about him. During an episode of his “Politics War Room” podcast alongside co-host Al Hunt, Carville responded to a caller from rural Texas who had noticed fewer Trump flags and campaign materials in the area.
The Texas caller expressed skepticism that Trump supporters would switch allegiances to Democrats, but questioned whether the decline in public displays of support might signal reduced voter enthusiasm heading into upcoming midterm elections. Carville indicated he had observed similar patterns during his recent travels to south Mississippi.
“I really agree with Kay,” Carville said, referencing the caller. He noted that accumulated anecdotal evidence becomes significant when it reflects consistent trends rather than isolated incidents. A year prior, Carville recalled encountering Trump supporters at retail locations and seeing merchandise stands along highways, experiences that have largely disappeared.
“I never hear that anymore! I never see that!” Carville stated, adding that the visibility of Trump campaign materials in pickup trucks and public spaces has dried up since the new year began. He maintained that these observations likely point to genuine shifts in public sentiment.
While Carville acknowledged that Trump voters would not suddenly convert to Democratic candidates, he suggested they would not generate the same overwhelming margins in rural areas they previously achieved. He framed this possibility as encouraging for Democrats.
Carville argued separately that while he understands why Americans voted for Trump in 2024, he views continued support for the president in 2026 as indefensible. He characterized ongoing Trump backers as fundamentally misguided individuals who should reconsider their political allegiances.
“If you’re still for Trump, you are a world-class buffoon,” Carville declared, arguing that Trump has abandoned his campaign promises and focuses exclusively on personal financial gain rather than benefiting ordinary Americans.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle dismissed Carville’s commentary when contacted by Fox News Digital, accusing the Democratic strategist of suffering from partisan bias and allowing personal animosity to cloud his judgment.
