The Florida Sun Journal: A Return to Crokitean Journalism

Written by Florida Sun Journal Founder, CEO, and Editor-in-Chief, Kurt Dillon

At a time when much of the modern media landscape has become defined by partisanship, outrage cycles, and ideological echo chambers, The Florida Sun Journal was founded with a different purpose: to return to a model of journalism rooted in clarity, restraint, and trust in the reader.

Our guiding inspiration is the standard once embodied by legendary broadcaster Walter Cronkite, whose nightly sign-off became one of the most recognizable phrases in American journalism: “And that’s the way it was.” With those simple words, Cronkite communicated a philosophy that placed the responsibility of journalism not in shaping public opinion, but in presenting the facts as accurately and honestly as possible. Of course, he had his own personal opinions and beliefs, but he never let them influence or slant the news he was reporting- that simply wasn’t his job.

That philosophy—what we now refer to as Crokitean Journalism—serves as the foundation of this entire media outlet and all of its subsidiaries.

Expressed in the simplest of terms, The Florida Sun Journal exists only to gather facts, investigate claims, and present information with discipline and transparency. Our mission is not to tell readers what they should believe. Instead, it is to present the most complete and verifiable picture of events so that readers themselves can decide what conclusions to draw.

We believe that a healthy society depends on an informed citizenry, and that informed citizens must be trusted to interpret information for themselves. Every reader brings a unique perspective to the table. Education, personal history, cultural background, family traditions, religious beliefs, and moral values all influence how individuals evaluate public events and political debates.

Those perspectives are not obstacles to understanding the news—they are part of what makes intellectual and academic discussion meaningful.

Rather than filtering information through a predetermined ideological lens, The Florida Sun Journal strives to present facts in a way that allows readers to apply their own experience, values, and judgment when evaluating issues that affect their communities, their states, and their country. This approach requires discipline. It demands careful sourcing, clear attribution, and a commitment to separating verifiable fact from speculation, rumor, or editorial interpretation. It also requires intellectual humility—the recognition that journalism’s primary responsibility is to report what can be known, not to claim certainty where it does not exist.

In an era when many outlets openly frame their reporting through partisan narratives, The Florida Sun Journal takes a different path. We believe journalism works best when it informs first and persuades never.

That does not mean every story will be comfortable or convenient. Investigative reporting, public accountability, and rigorous examination of those in positions of power remain central to the mission of any responsible newsroom. But the purpose of that work is illumination—not advocacy. Our role is to shine light on the facts. From local developments across Florida to national and global events that affect our readers’ lives, The Florida Sun Journal aims to provide reporting that is thorough, transparent, and grounded in evidence, not hyperbole, propaganda, or conjecture.

In the end, our goal is simple: to restore a sense of trust between journalists and the public by embracing a principle that once defined the profession.

Present the facts.

Let the readers decide.

And, in the spirit of the journalist who set the gold standard for generations of reporters before us—“That’s the way it is.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Dedicated journalism requires not only real effort and real dedication, but real money. The Florida Sun Journal will NEVER be influenced by the deep pockets of savvy investors who want to use their wealth to, in any way, influence or block the rightful dissemination of information to the public in accordance with their own personal ideologies. For that reason, we rely on the help of our everyday readers in assisting us to keep the lines of honest and factual information running fluidly through our pages, videos, and podcasts. If you have the means and the desire to help our mission of restoring integrity and neutrality to journalism, please consider becoming a subscriber to our publication and receive a lot of really cool perks in the process.
