During Friday’s broadcast of “Real Time,” Bill Maher leveled criticism at what he characterized as inconsistent Democratic Party treatment of religious expression, particularly regarding Judaism. The comedian made the remark while discussing Texas Democrat James Talarico’s prominent Christian faith with CNN anchor Dana Bash, who noted Talarico’s willingness to publicly display his religious convictions.

Maher responded by asserting that Democratic candidates may openly practice their faith freely within party structures, with one notable exception. “Well, in the Democratic Party, as long as that faith isn’t Jewish, you’re good,” he stated, drawing agreement from Bash before emphasizing the accuracy of his observation.

Recent Pew Research Center data appears to support Maher’s argument regarding Democratic sentiment toward Israel. The polling shows 80 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents view Israel unfavorably, a dramatic increase from 53 percent in 2022. By contrast, 58 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters maintain a favorable view of the Jewish state, while 41 percent hold negative opinions.

Sam Markstein, national political director for the Republican Jewish Coalition, endorsed Maher’s assessment when reached for comment Saturday. Markstein argued that the Republican Party represents the sole political organization where American Jews can openly express pride in their identity and support for Israel without resistance from party leadership.

Markstein cited Democratic decisions including Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 vice presidential selection process and the rise of left-leaning elected officials with pro-Palestinian positions as evidence supporting his claim. The Democratic National Committee did not respond to requests for comment regarding the allegations.
