Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen announced Thursday that three-time All-Star Ketel Marte will be transferred to the 10-day injured list, three days after the second baseman failed to appear for a game in Boston. The move comes as the team works to clarify details surrounding the veteran’s sudden absence and subsequent return to Phoenix for medical evaluation.
Marte traveled back to Arizona on Tuesday to undergo testing on his left knee, though manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged difficulty obtaining information from the player throughout the situation. The organization has not disclosed specific details about the nature or severity of the knee injury that prompted the roster move.
The timing of Marte’s injury complicates matters for the Diamondbacks, who are mounting a playoff push with a 67-61 record and trail the San Diego Padres by one game for the final National League wild-card berth. Arizona has not reached the postseason since advancing to the World Series in 2023, making depth at the infield position critical during the final weeks of the regular season.
Marte, batting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs this season, experienced a similar incident last year when he was placed on the restricted list after a home invasion in Arizona during the All-Star break. He subsequently traveled to the Dominican Republic and missed three games before issuing a public apology for his absence.
