Angie Nixon, a Democratic state representative who advanced from the Democratic primary for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida, has defended drag shows as appropriate entertainment for children. During an August podcast appearance on Legal AF, Nixon characterized restrictions on minors attending such performances as discriminatory attacks on marginalized communities.

The discussion centered on Florida’s Protection of Children Act, which bars individuals under 18 from attending certain drag performances. Nixon framed the legislation as part of a broader campaign to marginalize communities that differ from mainstream expectations. She argued the law represents an “attack on people who don’t look like Donald Trump” and an effort to enforce conformity in appearance, behavior, and belief.

Nixon openly stated she has taken her own children to drag shows, describing them as fun and wholesome. “There’s no sexualization at a drag show! It’s just people dressing up and singing and performing,” she said during the interview. “It’s entertainment and it’s nothing wrong.”

Critics strongly disputed Nixon’s characterization. Theo Wold, a former assistant attorney general under President Donald Trump, told Fox News Digital that drag entertainment has historically been sexualized and staged in bars and nightclubs for adult audiences. He suggested Nixon’s position reflects a larger agenda to destabilize Western institutions.

Jaimee Michell, founder of Gays Against Groomers, called Nixon’s comments “dangerous lies” and cited video evidence of explicit performances in front of children. Michell stated that drag by definition constitutes adult sexual performance rather than family entertainment, and questioned Nixon’s judgment in exposing her children to such content.

Nixon, a progressive activist and Democratic Socialists of America member, defeated retired Air Force officer Alexander Vindman in the primary by more than 10 percentage points despite Vindman’s significantly larger campaign budget of $16.3 million compared to Nixon’s approximately $1 million. She will face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in November for the remainder of Senator Marco Rubio’s term.
