A 29-year veteran of the Miami Beach Police Department earned departmental recognition for his quick thinking and decisive action in saving a man from choking. Sgt. Alex Bello, who was off-duty and at a Hialeah restaurant on Saturday, immediately stepped in to assist an elderly patron experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency. Video documentation of the incident captures Bello executing the Heimlich maneuver with precision, ultimately dislodging the obstruction and restoring the victim’s ability to breathe.

The restaurant staff and patrons responded with applause once they realized the man had regained consciousness and was breathing normally. Bello’s humility regarding the incident was evident in his remarks, noting that he happened to be in the right location at the critical moment. The victim’s family expressed profound gratitude to Bello and the restaurant personnel for their swift intervention during the frightening ordeal.

Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones presented Bello with the department’s Lifesaving Award during a formal ceremony held Thursday. Bello, who was working at MBPD’s evidence warehouse when the incident occurred, emphasized that public service remains his fundamental motivation. He stated his satisfaction in having been able to preserve the life of the gentleman and reunite him with his loved ones.
