President Donald Trump on Wednesday unveiled what he termed an “economic D-Day” against Iran, vowing to impose severe financial penalties on any nation that provides assistance to the Islamic Republic. In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump declared he was implementing “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY,” framing the initiative as economic warfare designed to isolate Tehran from global financial systems.
Trump specifically warned allied nations that their financial institutions, businesses, airports, and government agencies would face “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” if they facilitate any form of support to Iran. The president targeted a range of financial mechanisms including oil smuggling networks, currency swap arrangements, cash transfers, foreign exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies, demanding an immediate halt to all such activities.
The president asserted that Iran’s military capabilities have been severely degraded, claiming the nation’s navy and air force are “destroyed” and production facilities reduced to “rubble.” Trump added that Tehran’s currency has become “worthless” and characterized the country as “hanging by a thread,” suggesting Iran’s economic and strategic position has collapsed under existing U.S. pressure.
The announcement coincided with an intensifying U.S. pressure campaign against Iran, including a naval blockade intended to force Iranian capitulation. Iranian officials countered on Wednesday by warning neighboring Gulf states against cooperating with American military operations in the region.
The United Arab Emirates, a key U.S. regional ally, severed all financial and economic ties with Iran on Wednesday, citing military escalation from Tehran involving incoming missile attacks. Iran has conducted similar military strikes against neighboring nations in recent months as regional tensions have escalated throughout the conflict.
During the broader conflict, Iran has relied on regional proxy forces and allied groups to conduct military operations while traditionally maintaining strategic relationships with China and Russia. On Monday, Trump threatened military action against Oman if the nation impedes efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway and major point of dispute between the opposing parties.
