A Democratic Socialists of America member has secured another major victory against the Democratic Party establishment, this time ousting Alexander Vindman, a retired Air Force officer, in a Florida primary race. State lawmaker Angie Nixon surpassed the establishment-endorsed candidate by more than 10 percentage points, despite facing a significant financial disadvantage—Vindman’s campaign spent $16.3 million compared to Nixon’s approximately $1 million.

Nixon gained widespread attention in April when she protested redistricting legislation on the Florida House floor. Dressed in a pink jumpsuit and wielding a pink megaphone, she walked down the chamber’s aisle during the final vote on a redistricting bill backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. The lawmaker repeatedly declared the measure unconstitutional while shouting “You are out of order!” and “I will not allow you to destroy our democracy!” throughout the voting process. The House approved the bill 83-28 despite her vocal opposition.

Nixon’s activism extended beyond the legislative chamber. A month after the redistricting protest, she was arrested at DeSantis’ office while refusing to leave during a demonstration against the same measure, though she was released shortly thereafter. The DSA member has previously acknowledged her organizational affiliation publicly.

Her campaign platform centers on a “working families guarantee” that includes Medicare for all, free childcare, a national rent freeze, an eviction moratorium, and a universal jobs program with inflation-adjusted wages. Nixon proposes funding these initiatives through taxation on billionaires and reduced military spending overseas.

Nixon has advocated for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and reconstructing immigration enforcement systems, stating “I don’t believe any person is illegal, and I don’t believe human beings should be treated as commodities in a system built to punish rather than to heal.” On public safety, she has called for demilitarizing police forces while investing in community-based violence prevention and crisis response programs.

The lawmaker has also taken positions on international affairs and cultural matters. She has alleged that the United States has “fueled the genocide in Palestine” and previously objected to legislative resolutions honoring Charlie Kirk, whom she described as homophobic, antisemitic, and misogynistic.
