New York’s Sole GOP House Member Denounces Democratic Leaders Over Voter ID Opposition

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis of New York, the sole Republican representing the city in Congress, leveled accusations of political hypocrisy at Democratic leaders who oppose voter identification legislation while maintaining they support such measures back home. During an interview with Fox News Digital, the congresswoman argued that party officials deceive their constituents by endorsing voter ID in district settings before voting against it in Washington.

Malliotakis called for Senate passage of President Donald Trump’s Safeguard America’s Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would mandate proof of American citizenship at voting. She emphasized that public opinion strongly favors such requirements, noting that over 80 percent of Americans support voter identification measures regardless of political party or race.

The House has approved the legislation four times, leaving Senate action as the final hurdle, Malliotakis stated. She singled out Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for particular criticism, asserting that the Democratic leader consistently opposes voter ID bills despite telling constituents otherwise and that all Senate Democrats voted against the GOP proposal.

Malliotakis also targeted Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration for what she characterized as glaring inconsistency regarding identification requirements. She pointed to city programs requiring photo identification for supermarket access and snow removal services while simultaneously resisting voter ID mandates for elections, calling the disparity a fundamental contradiction.

The congresswoman referenced a recent National Night Out event in her Staten Island district where Mamdani was booed from the stage, attributing the reception to his past advocacy for police defunding and what she described as his “communist agenda.” She noted that Staten Island remains the only New York City borough that did not support Mamdani in electoral contests.
