The struggling New York Mets have agreed to send starting pitcher Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for three minor league players, according to a source with knowledge of the transaction who requested anonymity. The trade was confirmed Sunday, one day before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline closes Monday at 6 p.m. EDT, and comes as both teams position themselves for the stretch run.
Peralta, a two-time All-Star eligible for free agency after the World Series, has underperformed since arriving in New York via a January trade from Milwaukee. The transaction will provide the Rays, who held the American League’s best record at 65-45 and a 3½-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East, with an additional rotation piece to complement their existing pitching depth.
The Mets will receive outfielder Aidan Smith, infielder Emilien Pitre and right-hander Gary Gill Hill as compensation for the veteran hurler. The deal represents New York’s effort to retool its roster after a disappointing season in the standings.
