The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired right-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, bolstering their rotation ahead of the postseason stretch, ESPN reported Saturday night. The trade sends three prospects to Detroit: outfielder Zyhir Hope, ranked as baseball’s 25th-best prospect by MLB, along with relievers Brady Smith and River Ryan.
Skubal, 29, has won the American League Cy Young Award in back-to-back seasons with Detroit but struggled with injuries this year. After undergoing arthroscopic elbow surgery in May, the pitcher missed six months before returning to action in mid-June. He carries a 7-5 record in 2024 and is set to enter free agency this offseason.
The pitcher is owed the remainder of his $32 million salary by the Dodgers, who acquired him during the season and thus cannot extend a qualifying offer. Skubal last pitched for Detroit on July 29 and could debut for Los Angeles during the Dodgers’ upcoming series against the Chicago Cubs beginning Monday.
The deal has intensified criticism over competitive balance in baseball, with the Dodgers already holding a commanding 10-game lead in the National League West and a 69-42 record. Detroit, sitting just 2.5 games out of the Wild Card, traded away its star pitcher while remaining in contention, drawing particular frustration from Tigers fans.
