A Florida appeals court has cleared the way for trial proceedings against the Broward Sheriff’s Office in connection with its handling of the 2018 Parkland school shooting. The court’s recent decision eliminated the agency’s immunity defense, allowing the case to move forward based on allegations of negligence during the attack that killed 17 students and staff members and injured 17 others.
The legal action was initiated by survivors and families of those who died in the massacre. The lawsuit names former school resource deputy Scot Peterson among its defendants, with prosecutors alleging he remained outside the building throughout the shooting and failed to engage the gunman.
Peterson was acquitted on child neglect charges in 2023 following a separate criminal trial. The civil trial is scheduled to commence in early 2025.
