Person Shot in Thigh During Gun Struggle With Chicago Police in Fuller Park

A person was injured during a struggle over a gun with Chicago police officers early Saturday in Fuller Park on the South Side.

Officers assigned to the 9th District Tactical Team responded to a call of a large gathering in the 5300 block of South Princeton Avenue around 12:30 a.m. and attempted to disperse a crowd, Chicago police said.

While attempting to break up the crowd, officers stopped a person for possible possession of a gun, police said. During a brief physical struggle, the person's gun discharged and they were shot in the thigh.

Officers called for an ambulance and the person was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, police said.

The officers did not fire their weapons and no other injuries were reported, police said.

The Investigative Response Team is working the case.

Chicago police responded to reports of a sizable crowd gathering in the 5300 block of South Princeton Avenue in Fuller Park around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Officers from the 9th District Tactical Team arrived at the scene and began working to clear the area, according to department statements.

As officers worked to disperse the gathering, they identified an individual they believed to be carrying a firearm and moved to detain that person. The situation escalated when a physical confrontation broke out between the suspect and police during the attempted apprehension.

The gun discharged during the struggle, striking the individual in the thigh. Chicago police confirmed that officers did not discharge any weapons during the incident, and emergency responders transported the injured person to University of Chicago Medical Center where they were listed in good condition.

No additional injuries were sustained during the confrontation, police said. The department’s Investigative Response Team has assumed responsibility for the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
