Clearwater Beach has earned international recognition in Tripadvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” Awards, ranking as the second-best beach in the United States and the top-ranked beach in Florida. The Gulf Coast destination trailed only La Jolla Cove in California in the national rankings, while also securing a place among the most highly regarded beaches worldwide.
Only three beaches in the United States appeared on Tripadvisor’s global list this year, and Clearwater Beach was the only Florida beach included in the worldwide rankings.
The awards, announced in mid-February, are based on millions of traveler reviews submitted to Tripadvisor over a twelve-month period. The platform evaluates destinations using visitor feedback on factors such as sand quality, water clarity, accessibility, and overall experience. Beaches that consistently receive exceptional ratings are placed in the “Best of the Best” category, representing the top one percent of destinations worldwide.
For Clearwater Beach, the recognition reflects the qualities that have long made it one of Florida’s most popular coastal destinations. Visitors frequently cite the beach’s soft white quartz sand, calm Gulf waters, and wide shoreline as key elements of its appeal. The beach’s gradual slope and typically gentle surf create favorable conditions for swimming and water recreation, while its expansive shoreline accommodates large numbers of visitors without feeling overcrowded.
The surrounding district also contributes to Clearwater Beach’s strong reputation. Hotels, restaurants, and attractions are located within walking distance of the shoreline, allowing visitors to easily move between the beach and nearby entertainment venues. The area’s pedestrian-friendly layout and accessible public spaces make it particularly attractive for families and vacationers seeking a convenient coastal experience.
One of the beach’s most recognizable landmarks, Pier 60, continues to serve as a focal point for tourism activity. The pier and adjacent promenade host daily sunset celebrations that feature live entertainment, local artisans, and street performers. Visitors also take advantage of fishing opportunities and scenic views of the Gulf, while nearby marinas offer boat tours, dolphin-watching cruises, and other water-based excursions.
Outdoor recreation has expanded in recent years as well. Kayak tours, paddle excursions, and guided coastal trips allow visitors to explore the surrounding waterways and marine life. These activities have broadened the destination’s appeal beyond traditional beachgoing and contributed to the consistently positive reviews that influence Tripadvisor’s rankings.
Clearwater’s rise in this year’s rankings also comes as another well-known Florida beach saw its long-held position change. Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota has long been a fixture on Tripadvisor’s lists and frequently claimed the number one spot in previous years, widely praised for its fine white sand and expansive shoreline.
However, Siesta Key was heavily impacted by Hurricane Milton last year, which made landfall along Florida’s Gulf Coast and caused significant damage in the Sarasota region. The storm’s surge and erosion altered portions of the shoreline and disrupted the pristine beach conditions that had helped Siesta Key maintain its top ranking for years. While restoration efforts are ongoing, the long-term effects of the storm have contributed to the beach falling from its usual position at the top of the national rankings.
Tourism officials across the region have noted that recovery work continues, with restoration projects focused on rebuilding damaged coastal areas and preserving the beaches that define Florida’s Gulf Coast tourism economy.
Meanwhile, Clearwater Beach has continued to benefit from sustained investment in infrastructure and visitor amenities. Improvements to public spaces, boardwalk areas, and beachfront access points have helped maintain the area’s appeal while supporting the large number of visitors the destination attracts each year.
Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” awards are widely regarded as one of the travel industry’s most influential rankings because they rely entirely on user-generated reviews from travelers who have visited the destinations themselves. Rather than editorial selections, the awards reflect the collective experiences of millions of visitors around the world.
Florida remained well represented in the national rankings overall, with several beaches appearing on the list. However, Clearwater Beach emerged as the highest-ranked destination in the state and one of the most celebrated coastal locations in the country.
